When the platelets try to patch up an injury within a small Blood vessel and completely plug it up instead. This plug obstructs the normal flow of Blood and can result in a heart attack or stroke.

Von Willebrand Disease:

Von Willebrand disease is almost always inherited. This means that parents pass a gene for the disease on to their children. The gene for the disease is usually dominant. That means that a parent with the disease has a 50 percent or 1 in 2 chance of passing the gene to each of his or her children.Certain proteins in your blood help the blood to clot. Von Willebrand factor is one of those proteins. It is made by the lining of cells in the wall of blood vessels (veins and arteries). When blood vessels are damaged, platelets (small blood cells that collect and stick together to plug cuts and breaks in blood vessels) clump together at the site of the injury. Von Willebrand factor acts like glue that helps the platelets stick together. Von Willebrand factor is also a carrier of clotting factor VIII, another protein that helps your blood to clot.

Deep Vein Thrombosis :

A deep vein thrombosis is a blood clot that forms in a vein deep in the body. Most deep vein clots occur in the leg or hip veins. They also can occur in other parts of the body. Blood clots in the veins in the thigh are usually more serious than blood clots that happen in veins in your lower leg.

Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura

Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is a bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot as it should. The bleeding is due to a low number of platelets which help the blood clot and stop bleeding. People with ITP often have purple bruises that appear on the skin. The bruises mean that bleeding has occurred in small blood vessels under the skin.

With ITP: People may have bleeding from the gums when they have dental work done, nosebleeds, or other bleeding that is hard to stop.Women may have heavy menstrual bleeding, Symptomatic bleeding in the brain is very rare but can be life threatening if it occurs

Early or excessive removal of platelets leads to thrombocytopenia. People with thrombocytopenia bruise easily and experience prolonged bleeding when they are cut. Thrombocytopenia most commonly results from idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura, commonly known as ITP. Thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura (TTP) is a rare disease of uncertain origin characterized by hemolytic anemia, low platelet counts renal failure and central nervous system problems. It arises from platelets becoming plugged in blood vessels leading to wide spread damage. Splenectomy is often curative.

Tumors or Cysts

Tumors of the spleen are very unusual and rarely malignant. Cysts of the spleen do occur and can often produce symptoms if they become large enough. Splenic cysts may result for injury to the spleen or may be congenital.
